EDUCATION

Youth Education
The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $30,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.

Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program

Texas Seal
The Texas Armed Services Scholarship is to encourage students to become members of the Texas Army National Guard, the Texas Air National Guard, the Texas State Guard, the United States Coast Guard, or the United States Merchant Marine, or to become commissioned officers in any branch of the armed services of the United States. Each year the governor and the lieutenant governor may each appoint two students, and each state senator and each state representative may appoint one student to receive an initial conditional scholarship award.

Teacher of the Year
Teacher Recognition
Each year the VFW recognizes three exceptional teachers – one each from the elementary, junior high and high school levels – for their outstanding commitment to teach Americanism and instill patriotism in their students.

 Art Contests
Kids Drawing Contests
Each year, more than 3,500 high school students from across the country participate in the VFW Auxiliary’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest. The contest began in 1979 to recognize up-and-coming artists and encourage patriotism in youth. This year the national winner will receive a $15,000 scholarship.

In 2019/20 the VFW Auxiliary introduced the Illustrating America art contest for grades K-8 broken down to grades K-2, 3-5 and 6-8 levels. Winners may receive gift cards ranging from $25 to $100.

As combat veterans, we play an important role in educating our nation’s youth about the principles and ideals upon which America was founded. VFW members regularly provide students with rare insight into the great sacrifices our service members make to maintain freedom for all of us.

NASSP
Attention Teachers:  The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen on the NASSP National Advisory List of Contests and Activities. We thank all of America’s teachers and youth leaders for the time, effort and commitment they invest in our young people each year. We have a number of ways in which to assist you in helping to ensure your students get a head start on their future.
